NEWTOWN: WHERE COFFEE MEETS CULTURE

Neighbourhood — 1 April 2025

Our Newtown venue sits at the intersection of King Street's art galleries, record shops, and community gardens. We explore what makes this neighbourhood one of Sydney's most caffeinated postcodes.

King Street, Newtown, is unlike any other street in Sydney.

In the space of a kilometre, you pass record shops that have been there since the eighties, galleries showing work that will be in museums in twenty years, bookshops where the staff actually read the books, and community gardens tended by people who have lived in the neighbourhood for decades. It is a street that resists homogenisation — and that is exactly why we opened here.

The Chambers Newtown venue opened in 2017, in a heritage-listed terrace that had previously been a printer's workshop. We kept the exposed brick, the timber beams, and the industrial bones. We added our palette — peacock blue, cream, and the warm charcoal of our espresso — and created a space that felt like it belonged.

Newtown's coffee culture is discerning. The regulars know their origin stories, their extraction ratios, their preferred milk alternatives. They are not impressed by hype; they are impressed by consistency. That suits us perfectly.

The neighbourhood has given us as much as we have given it. The artists who work nearby have contributed to our visual identity. The musicians who play the local venues have soundtracked our mornings. The community has made us part of its fabric.

Newtown is not just a location for Chambers. It is a reminder of what a great café can be: a genuine part of the neighbourhood it serves.
