PADDINGTON IN SUMMER: THE CHAMBERS GUIDE

Neighbourhood — 1 December 2024

Paddington in December is a different city. We asked our Paddo team to map their favourite summer spots — from the Oxford Street markets to the shaded tables behind our café.

Paddington in December is a different city.

The jacarandas are gone, replaced by the deep green of summer. The Oxford Street markets are at their best — the light is good, the crowds are generous, and the vendors have their best stock out for the pre-Christmas rush. The side streets behind the terrace houses are quiet in the mornings, loud with cicadas by noon.

Our Paddington team has been here long enough to know the neighbourhood's rhythms. We asked them to map their favourite summer spots — the places they go before their shift, the places they recommend to regulars, the places that make Paddington worth living in.

The shaded tables behind the café, where the fig tree drops its leaves in autumn and provides cover in summer, are the obvious starting point. But the team's recommendations go further: the heritage rose garden in Centennial Park, the Saturday morning swim at Bondi, the independent bookshop on Oxford Street that stocks Australian fiction nobody else carries.

Paddington is a neighbourhood that rewards the curious. The best things here are not on the main street; they are around the corner, down the lane, through the gate. Our team knows where they are.

Come in for a coffee and ask. We are happy to share.
